Mumbai: In a major crackdown on illegal medical practices, the Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested two bogus doctors operating in the Shivajinagar–Govandi area for allegedly treating patients without any recognized medical qualifications or licenses.

The accused have been identified as Rajiv Kapildev Ranjan (32) and Kubernath Gomti Yadav (56). Both were found running clinics and administering treatment despite not being registered with the Maharashtra Medical Council or having any legal authorization to practice medicine.

According to officials, Crime Branch Unit 6 received credible information about unqualified individuals posing as doctors, endangering lives while charging hefty fees. Acting on the tip-off, police, along with officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s M-East Ward health department, conducted coordinated raids at two clinics in Shivajinagar.

During the raid at Neelam Kuber Chikitsalaya in Bainganwadi, Yadav was found examining patients and administering treatment. On questioning, he admitted that he did not possess any recognized medical degree or registration. He stated that he had studied up to Class 12 and held a certificate from a Delhi-based institute, which had expired in 2021. He also confessed to practicing for nearly 14 years.

Patients were present at the clinic during the raid, including one undergoing saline treatment, while others said they had visited for ailments such as fever and cold. Yadav was allegedly prescribing medicines and collecting consultation fees without legal authorization.

In a separate but related operation, the Crime Branch raided Dr. K.D. Bansal Clinic in the same locality, where Ranjan was found treating patients. He produced certificates from a Patna-based electro-homeopathy institute but failed to provide valid registration with the Maharashtra Medical Council. He also admitted to not holding a license to practice allopathic medicine.

During the raids, police seized a large quantity of medical supplies, including injection vials, syringes, antibiotics, and other drugs, which were sealed as evidence.

Based on complaints filed by BMC medical officers, including Dr. Dipali Rupnar and Dr. Jayshree Tribhuvan, two separate cases have been registered at Shivajinagar Police Station under Sections 33 and 36 of the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act, 1961.

Further investigation is underway to ascertain whether more individuals are involved in similar illegal medical practices in the area.
