Mumbai: The BMC's proposal to open a seafood plaza behind the Shirley Village bus stop at Carter Road in Khar Danda has sparked opposition from local residents.

The proposed location, adjacent to the Carter Road Promenade and the open-air chess area, has raised concerns about potential traffic congestion and increased garbage in the area, both of which could harm the environment and the quality of life for locals.

The Citizens Movement for Environment & Civic Action has objected to the proposal, emphasising the importance of preserving the area's unique infrastructure, particularly the chess space, which serves as a hub for local chess players and enthusiasts.

The movement argues that the proposed location would disturb this recreational area, used by chess players well into the night, and that alternative spaces should be considered for the seafood plaza.

Residents fear that the plaza, situated near Khau Galli, could disrupt the peaceful, open spaces where families, elderly people, and visitors currently enjoy. They have gathered 86 signatures from regular chess players and local residents who are concerned about the impact of the plaza on the community's activities and the environment. Previously, the civic body opened the first facility in Mahim Koliwada in November 2023 followed by another at Worli Koliwada.

The initiative aims to prioritise women from the local fishing community, particularly those from the women self-help group (WSHG), to manage and operate the seafood stalls. The local WSHGs and fisherwomen in the Khar danda area will be given priority to set up their stalls.

However, to ensure smoother operations and avoid the issues faced at the previous plazas, suggestions and objections had been invited from the locals before proceeding with the new venture.
