Mumbai, August 6, 2026: The BMC has begun rolling out its integrated solid waste collection and transportation system from G-South ward, covering Worli, Prabhadevi and adjoining areas, marking the first phase of a citywide overhaul.
However, the transition has temporarily disrupted garbage collection in parts of the ward, with civic officials saying the new system is expected to stabilise within three to four days.
Integrated Waste Management Begins
Mumbai generates around 7,200 metric tonnes of waste daily, and the BMC is replacing its fragmented collection network with an integrated ward-wise model under which a single contractor will handle all waste management operations in each ward.
The scope includes door-to-door collection, transportation, maintenance of community bins, installation and upkeep of roadside litter bins, collection of segregated dry waste, and a dedicated toll-free call centre for grievance redressal.
The integrated system will be introduced across Mumbai in phases through eight contractors. Since the rollout requires replacing the existing collection and transportation network with an entirely new mechanism, temporary disruptions are expected during the transition, particularly in Worli and Prabhadevi. The BMC has appealed to citizens to cooperate, assuring them that services will normalise once the changeover is completed.

According to a senior official from the BMC's Solid Waste Management Department, "The new system will use high-capacity enclosed vehicles to reduce trips, fuel consumption and emissions. The vehicles are equipped with leachate collection systems to prevent wastewater leakage and foul odour, while enclosed transport will eliminate waste spillage on roads. Around 10-15 per cent of the fleet will be electric, further reducing fuel consumption and air pollution."
