Mumbai, August 22, 2026: Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) Chairman Siddhesh Kadam has directed the BMC to undertake a comprehensive survey of all beaches across Mumbai and immediately deploy the machinery, technology and adequate manpower required for effective and sustained cleaning.

A review meeting was held at the BMC headquarters on Friday, attended by Kadam, Additional Municipal Commissioner Vipin Sharma and senior officials of MPCB and Solid Waste Management (SWM) department, to assess the ongoing beach-cleaning drive and address wider environmental concerns. Cleanliness at Juhu, Gorai, Versova, Dadar and other beaches across Mumbai city and its suburbs was reviewed in detail.

Cleaning Resources Reviewed

Following an assessment of the existing cleaning machinery and manpower, Kadam directed the civic administration to conduct on-ground inspections and urgently strengthen resources wherever required. The meeting also flagged the flow of plastic and other waste through drains into the sea, calling for immediate intervention.

Kadam further directed the BMC to intensify enforcement against single-use plastic and ensure strict implementation of the ban on thermocol and plastic flowers during Ganeshotsav. Discussions also covered solid-waste management at Deonar and Kanjurmarg, sewage-related issues, and the scientific disposal of construction and demolition debris.

Waste Along Mumbai Coastline

The urgency of the clean-up comes amid significant waste accumulation along Mumbai’s coastline during the monsoon. In a special beach-cleaning drive conducted last month, the BMC cleared 2,498.66 metric tonnes of plastic, thermocol, wooden debris, aquatic vegetation and other waste washed ashore by tidal activity, and scientifically processed and disposed of the collected material.

Juhu recorded the highest waste collection at 1,825 MT, followed by Versova (277.6 MT), Dadar–Mahim (152.1 MT), Chimbai–Waringpada (127.2 MT), Madh–Marve (44.28 MT), Gorai (38.82 MT) and Girgaon Chowpatty (33.66 MT).
