Mira-Bhayandar: The crime detection unit of the Valiv police station have arrested two people who stole high-end motorcycles to fulfil their passion of performing racing stunts. Alarmed by the sudden spike in bike lifting cases in the Vasai-Virar belt, the crime detection unit was roped in to investigate the thefts and nab the culprits.

The accused who have been identified as-Sahil Shahid Ali Shaikh alias Bappi (20) and Arshan Zakir Saudagar alias Arshu (22)- both residents of Malwani area in Malad had stolen a Pulsar bike from a parking lot in Vasai on 8, April.

A team led by API- Sachin Sanap started investigations and found credible leads after scanning footage captured by nearly 300 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras to track down both the accused persons. Investigations revealed that the passion for bike stunts on high-end bikes drove the school dropouts into committing the thefts.

It is also suspected that the duo after using the stolen bikes would dismantle them making identification nearly impossible, before selling the spares in scrap potentially avoiding detection and hindering recovery efforts.

The police team recovered seven stolen motor-cycles and spares collectively worth more than Rs 8.21 lakh from the possession of the duo against whom an offence under sections 303 (theft), 238 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita has been registered at the Valiv police station.

A background check of the duo revealed their involvement in similar bike lifting cases committed by them under the jurisdictions of police stations including- Valiv, Powai, Bhandup, Dahisar, Tulinj, Deonar and Malwani. Police personnel-Vinayak Raut is conducting further investigations.
