In a move to ensure the safety of over 5.5 million daily passengers, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has unveiled a comprehensive strategy focused on driver training, mental health, and the technical soundness of vehicles. This decision comes in light of recent accidents involving MSRTC buses in Bhandara and Nashik and Kurla BEST bus accident , highlighting the urgent need for safety reforms.

MSRTC Vice Chairman and Managing Director Madhav Kusekar, along with other senior officials, participated in the meeting, which marked a significant step toward ensuring passenger safety and operational efficiency.

Speaking on the issue, MSRTC Chairman and MLA Bharat Gogawale emphasized the corporation’s commitment to passenger safety. Addressing senior officials during a meeting on Wednesday, Gogawale underscored the importance of proper driver training, rigorous selection procedures, and maintaining a fleet of technically sound buses.

Driver Training and Mental Health Initiatives

Currently, MSRTC mandates refresher training for its drivers every six months. These sessions focus on improving driving skills and prioritizing mental health, followed by practical driving tests before reinstatement. Gogawale also called for strict enforcement of regulations, including a zero-tolerance policy for intoxication during duty.  To address driver shortages, he suggested exploring the possibility of hiring private drivers under strict supervision. "Passenger safety is our ultimate objective," Gogawale stated.

Aging Fleet and Supplier Accountability

With a fleet of 14,000 buses, many nearing obsolescence, MSRTC faces a pressing challenge in meeting passenger demand. Gogawale instructed the administration to issue show-cause notices to bus suppliers delaying the delivery of new vehicles. He stressed the importance of timely procurement to modernize the fleet and enhance operational efficiency.

Proposal for Fare Hike

The meeting also addressed MSRTC's financial challenges, including rising costs of employee salaries, fuel, tires, and spare parts. To alleviate financial strain, MSRTC plans to submit a proposal for a fare hike to the state government. This revision, pending since 2021, aims to ensure sustainable operations.
