With the monsoon fast approaching, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis chaired a high-level meeting of the State Disaster Management Authority to review Maharashtra’s preparedness. He directed officials to intensify mitigation efforts and adopt advanced technology to minimize the impact of natural disasters on citizens and infrastructure.
Highlighting the need for strict flood control measures, CM Fadnavis emphasized that flood lines should not merely be symbolic but must be enforced, ensuring that no encroachments occur beyond them. “Accurate satellite-based mapping should be used during surveys to mark flood zones,” he stated. He also urged authorities to make greater use of modern technologies in disaster response and planning.
The Chief Minister directed officials to speed up the implementation of disaster mitigation projects, such as underground electricity lines, anti-erosion walls, cyclone shelters, and landslide prevention infrastructure, particularly in the Konkan region. He further instructed the use of disaster management funds for both preparedness and post-disaster repairs, including restoration of damaged roads, power lines, and dams following heavy rainfall.
Moreover, Fadnavis instructed officers to provide disaster kits to Gram Panchayats, along with necessary manpower training, to enable immediate response during emergencies. He also called for strengthening the 'Apda Mitra' volunteer program by offering proper training, maintaining a database, and issuing ID cards.
The review meeting, held at the Sahyadri Guest House, was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan, Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik, and other senior officials.
Deputy CM Ajit Pawar stressed the importance of enhancing river flow capacity by cleaning and desilting rivers and removing debris, urging the Water Resources Department to prioritize these tasks.
Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan recommended that disaster kits provided to local bodies include essential tools to assist in emergencies such as accidents. He also emphasized the need to train personnel to use the equipment effectively.
Additionally, instructions were given to lay underground power lines in Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani to prevent cyclone-related damage in the future.
The meeting concluded with a comprehensive presentation on preparedness by senior officials from the Relief, Rehabilitation, and Disaster Management Department.
