Navi Mumbai: The Kharghar Hill Mayor Marathon, billed as the country’s first full 42-km hill marathon, was held with enthusiastic participation at Central Park, Kharghar, on Sunday. The event was organised by the Panvel Municipal Corporation and witnessed the participation of several dignitaries and runners.
The marathon has gained significance after receiving certification from the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS). Organisers said the certification is expected to pave the way for the event to gain wider international recognition from next year and attract runners from across India and abroad.
The marathon is also expected to enhance Panvel’s identity on the national and international running circuit and promote Kharghar as a destination for endurance events.
Meanwhile, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde participated in the half-marathon category and completed the 21.2-km distance in 2 hours, 26 minutes and 22 seconds.
Shinde, who has previously participated in prestigious races including the Comrades Marathon in South Africa and the Tata Mumbai Marathon, has maintained his running routine despite his demanding responsibilities as NMMC commissioner.
He continues to train early in the morning and credits running with helping him maintain fitness, discipline and perseverance. His participation and successful completion of the Kharghar Hill Marathon drew appreciation from colleagues and citizens.
