Kalyan: Barely days after an alleged assault on a doctor and nurse at Shastrinagar Hospital in Dombivli another incident of violence against a medical professional has been reported from the Bhanu Jyot Hospital in Kalyan East, triggering concern among doctors and hospital staff over their safety.
Relative of patient accused of assault
According to information available, a doctor was allegedly assaulted inside his cabin by a relative accompanying a patient. The incident was captured on CCTV, and the Kolsewadi police have registered a case and initiated an investigation.
The incident occurred when a patient visited Bhanu Jyot Hospital accompanied by a relative. Dr Yogendra Jaiswal was reportedly explaining the patient's condition and the proposed treatment when the relative allegedly became agitated and entered into an argument with the doctor.
CCTV captures alleged assault
As the situation began to escalate, the patient reportedly intervened and asked the relative to leave the cabin. However, according to the complaint, the same person returned to the doctor's cabin a short while later and allegedly assaulted Dr Jaiswal.
The sudden altercation created panic inside the hospital. Hospital staff intervened and managed to bring the situation under control. The entire incident was reportedly captured on CCTV cameras installed inside the hospital.
The Kolsewadi police have taken cognisance of the incident and begun investigating the circumstances leading to the alleged assault. Police are also examining the CCTV footage as part of the probe.
Rising concern among medical fraternity
The latest incident has once again brought the issue of security in hospitals into focus. The alleged assault comes at a time when doctors and healthcare workers in the Kalyan-Dombivli region are already expressing concern over incidents of violence at medical facilities.
Doctors say that confrontations over treatment, waiting time and other issues can escalate rapidly, leaving medical professionals vulnerable to physical attacks while performing their duties.
The latest incident has also renewed demands from the medical fraternity for stronger security arrangements at hospitals and prompt action against those who attack healthcare workers.
With repeated incidents being reported from hospitals, doctors are now questioning whether they can focus entirely on treating patients without having to worry about their own safety.
The incident has added to the growing debate over whether hospitals, particularly those handling patients and their relatives round the clock, have adequate security mechanisms in place to protect doctors and other medical staff.
