Mumbai: In preparation for the upcoming monsoon season, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has ramped up desilting activities in major and minor drains (nallahs) and rivers across Mumbai. Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani visited several key locations in the city’s Western Suburbs to personally inspect the progress of these operations.

During his visit, Gagrani reviewed the ongoing desilting efforts and issued critical directives to the concerned officials. He stressed that the pre-monsoon desilting targets must be completed by May 31, to prevent waterlogging and flooding.

He further emphasised the need for all flood control gates to remain fully operational and instructed that trash booms be used strategically to avoid blockages. Ensuring a continuous and unobstructed flow in the city’s waterways was a top priority.

As of now, around 43 per cent of the targeted desilting work has been completed. The remaining work is expected to be finalised over the next month. The BMC is also introducing new measures to ensure better accountability and transparency. For the first time, artificial intelligence (AI) is being used to analyse video recordings of silt removal operations. This digital monitoring system aims to enhance the efficiency and oversight of the desilting process, making it more transparent than ever before.

An X post shared by the BMC highlighted the ongoing cleaning of rivers and drains across Mumbai, emphasising the importance of the desilting drive ahead of the monsoon. These efforts form part of Mumbai’s pre-monsoon strategy, with BMC focusing on timely and effective measures to minimise urban flooding and ensure the city is well-prepared for the rainy season.
