Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a special cleanliness drive targeting religious places and premises across the city, with the initiative officially starting at the Babulnath Temple near Girgaum Chowpatty on April 29.
The civic body shared highlights of the campaign via its official handle on X (formerly Twitter), emphasising its commitment to cleanliness and community hygiene. The drive aims to clean not only the temple premises but also nearby streets and public spaces frequented by worshippers. This initiative aligns with BMC’s broader efforts to improve sanitation and waste management in high-footfall areas.
A post shared by the BMC outlined details about the cleanliness drive's Day One achievements on April 28, 2025. The results include 26 religious places cleaned, 9.6 tonnes of debris removed, 14.0 tonnes of garbage collected, 9.0 tonnes of odd items cleared, 60 cleaning machines deployed, 801 sanitation workers mobilised, and 56 volunteers participating in the special cleanliness drive at religious places.
The campaign kicked off a day earlier in terms of groundwork, with a large-scale cleaning operation conducted on April 28. The scale of participation and the amount of waste collected on Day One reflect both the need and the public response to this civic effort. Locations for the drive are selected based on public footfall, historical importance, and sanitation needs.
The civic body has urged citizens and religious institutions to cooperate and support the initiative by maintaining cleanliness and minimising waste generation during religious activities. The BMC’s move has been welcomed by local residents and temple authorities, who see it as a positive step toward creating a cleaner and healthier Mumbai.
