Mumbai : The State filed its compliance report on suggestions made by the Justice (retd) Dharmadhikari committee on women’s safety in the Bombay High Court on Friday. The court, however, expressed displeasure on the steps taken by the state.
The court sought to know what action the authorities were taking on the complaints received on the helplines set up for women and children.
The division bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice A K Menon was hearing a public interest litigation filed by NGO Help Mumbai Foundation on the safety of women.
The court had directed the government to submit an action taken report on the complaints filed on the women and children helpline numbers 103 and 1091, respectively. Additional government pleader Geeta Shastri said that between January and October last year, 4,626 complaints were received on the helplines and most of them were disposed of.
However, when the judges asked about the procedure for dealing with complaints, she said they are simply forwarded to the concerned police stations.
Advocate Rajeev Chavan, representing the NGO said in many cases no action is taken, and it should be verified if the police stations have even acted on the complaints received.
The court has now directed the state to file a report on action taken on complaints received through helplines on the 1st day of October, November and December by 18th February.
