Mumbai : A raging fire caused extensive damage to property at a commercial building in Dadar (West) on Friday night. The fire fighting equipment of the building malfunctioned, leading to prolonging of the fire. No case of casualty or injury to people was reported.

The cause of the fire has not been determined yet. The Mumbai Fire Brigade has been instructed to cut off electricity and water supply to the building and the police have sealed the building until the fire fighting equipment is fixed.

This is usually done in cases where a fire has occurred but fire fighting equipment in either not in place or is not functioning, so as to ensure that the building remains uninhabited until declared safe.

Om Gopal shopping complex near Kabutarkhana caught fire at about 11.30pm on Friday.  The fire started on the second floor of the seven-storey building, destroying garments, electric wiring/installation, raw material, computers and furniture.

Eight fire engines, six tankers and an ambulance rushed to the spot and the fire was doused by 2.45 am.

Due to a drastic increase in serious fire incidents, the BMC and the fire department have been organising inspection drives on premises across Mumbai.

The civic body has carried out over 500 inspections so far and has also sent non-compliance notices to 275 societies.

These are issued to inspected premises as a warning of stringent action in case of further non-compliance. Legal prosecution has been initiated against three premises — Kenil Worth Mall in Bandra, Pramukh Plaza on Andheri-Kurla Road and Parekh Market at Opera House.
