Enthusiastic Mumbaikars celebrate International Yoga Day

More than 500 Mumbaikars from all walks of life came together on a single platform and participated in an-hour-long yoga session on the 5th International Yoga Day at the Antonio Da Silva turf, Dadar (West) on Friday morning.

Mumbai: More than 500 Mumbaikars from all walks of life came together on a single platform and participated in an-hour-long yoga session on the 5th International Yoga Day at the Antonio Da Silva turf, Dadar (West) on Friday morning. The message they want to spread was promote and practise yoga to lead a healthy lifestyle.

The event was organised by the Art of Living, founded by spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, and the session was conducted by Charu Sampat, a renowned yoga instructor based in the financial capital.

The session started off with the participants performing various asanas, and concluded by performing the Virbhadrasana (the warrior pose-1). All the 500 participants held the Virbhadrasana posture for 3 minutes straight, attempting a World record.

Importantly, an attempt was made in 22 cities, including New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Bangalore, across the country at the same time. The enthusiasts held the posture under the guidance of Yoga instructors in a session organised by the same organisation.

The International Day of Yoga was first celebrated on 2015 after PM Modi on September 27, 2014 in his speech in the UN General Assembly proposed to observe June 21 as the yoga day, as it is the longest day of the northern hemisphere, thus has special significance in many parts of the world, and must be observed.

Ramdev, Fadnavis perform yoga

Menwhile in Nanded, Yoga guru Baba Ramdev performed yoga, along with CM Devendra Fadnavis and his followers. Thousands of people participated in the event and performed various yoga asanas. Fadnavis was also seen following various yoga postures.

Ramdev’s organisation Patanjali organised programmes in one lakh villages across India. The theme of 5th International Yoga Day 2019 was “Climate Action”.

Symbol of culture, history: Gadkari

Union minister Nitin Gadkari said in Nagpur on Friday that yoga is a symbol of India’s ancient culture, history and heritage and it is practiced with great enthusiasm across the world.

Gadkari performed asanas with the people of Nagpur at Yashwant Stadium on the occasion of the International Yoga Day.

Speaking to the media, Gadkari said, “Yoga Shastra is a symbol of India’s culture, history and heritage. It is beingrecognised and celebrated with much enthusiasm across the world. “This way yoga will reach the last man in the society and help in living a healthy life.”

W Naval Command participates

In Mumbai alone, 21 camp sites saw enthusiastic participation by the Naval community. Personnel from units, ships and establishments performed yoga under the guidance of trained instructors and learnt the skills and understood its benefits. The Indian Navy was also prominent in its presence at the “Yoga By the Bay” initiative at the Marine Drive. About 100 naval personnel joined Mumbaikars for Yoga at the iconic venue. IN ships at sea too began their day with Yoga, thereby truly taking the initiative across the high seas.
