Bhayander : In a development that is bound to upset nature lovers, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) is once again mooting to drop the idea of creating artificial ponds for immersing Lord Ganesh idols this year. This despite an encouraging response it had received in 2013.
Civic chief-Vikram Kumar had introduced the concept of eco-friendly immersions in the twin-city in 2012 which was continued in a more elaborate manner by his successor Suresh Kakani, who created five artificial ponds that recorded 642 immersions in 2013. However, since last year, the civic administration has shunned the idea of creating artificial ponds. With 2,295 immersions recorded in the Mira Bhayandar region on occasion of Anant Chaturdashi, the total number of Lord Ganesh idols which graced the twin-city had crossed the 17,000 mark in 2014.
When contacted, civic chief Achyut Hange said: “ I am not aware about the actual status of creating artificial ponds this year. However, a meeting to review Ganeshutsav pre-preparedness has been scheduled on Tuesday, I will try and work out the prospects of making arrangements for eco-friendly immersions this year.”
