Mumbai: Colaba’s historic Church of St John the Evangelist, popularly known as the Afghan Church, is set to be re-imagined as a canvas of light, colour and celestial imagery from August 27 to 29. The mid-19th-century landmark will host ASCENSION, an ambitious immersive projection mapping installation presented by the Floating Canvas Company as part of the Mumbai Light Festival.

Between 7pm and 10pm over the three evenings, cutting-edge light projection and moving visuals will directly map onto the structure’s defining features, which will be open for the public to embrace. The narrative visual display aims to highlight the church's soaring Gothic arches, intricate stone carving and renowned stained-glass windows, blending digital artistry with heritage architecture.
The ASCENSION visual showcase is designed to explore humanity’s enduring fascination with the cosmos, framing the church's lofty interiors as a bridge between historical craftsmanship and digital art. The visual focus will showcase high-definition projection mapping across the main nave, choir vaulting and window traceries.
Built between 1847 and 1858 to commemorate the fallen soldiers of the First Anglo-Afghan War, the Afghan Church stands as one of the city's finest examples of Early English Gothic Revival architecture.
