Mumbai: As Maharashtra prepares for the upcoming monsoon season, health authorities are reporting a significant spike in chikungunya cases across the state. While malaria and dengue infections remain largely under control, the rise in chikungunya has prompted officials to increase surveillance and preventive measures.

According to the latest data from the National Centre for Vector Borne Disease Control (NCVBDC), chikungunya cases in the state rose from 473 in 2024 to 658 this year (up to April 21), a 39 per cent increase. In contrast, malaria cases dropped slightly from 2,867 last year to 2,726 in 2025, while dengue infections decreased from 1,639 to 1,373 in the same period as reported by Hindustan Times.

Importantly, there have been no deaths reported from any vector-borne diseases, including malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Zika, or Japanese Encephalitis (JE), in 2025 so far. This marks a notable improvement from last year, when four malaria-related deaths had already been reported by April.

A senior official from the state vector control unit, speaking on condition mentioned, “The absence of deaths shows that we’re detecting and treating cases early," as per reports.

The official added, "But the rise in chikungunya is a red flag. As the monsoon nears, intensified surveillance and source reduction efforts are essential." The health authorities are urging citizens to eliminate mosquito breeding sites and remain vigilant as the rainy season approaches.
