Mumbai : Several students who have passed their Class X examination from other than the State board have alleged that junior colleges are harassing them by demanding ‘unnecessary documents’ during the admission process. Students allege that colleges are questioning the eligibility and are demanding Counter Signature on transfer certificates of students from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) and International Baccalaureate (IB) boards, which according to education officers is not required at the time of granting admissions.
A parent, on condition of anonymity, said, “State education officials are giving step-motherly treatment to the students who had completed their 10th from other boards. They are sending us from pillar to post over this document or that.”
He added, “The college asked us for lists of documents out of which two were – eligibility certificate and leaving certificate counter signed by Education Inspector. They did not guide us on from where to obtain these certificates. I shuttled between Vashi board office to the Ghatkopar education office. Finally I was told that eligibility can be submitted later and college can do this on its own.”
Another parent said, “Since we don’t know Marathi, they harassed us as if we are not Indian. Finally, everything went smooth, once I promised a ‘reward’ after process.” Office of the Deputy Director Education said that other board students don’t require the eligibility certificate at the time of admission. After the admission, the college can make the collective process to obtain eligibility certificate of all students.
