Bhiwandi, August 21, 2026: The Kongaoan police have arrested two men in connection with the murder of a trailer driver who was allegedly killed during an attempted robbery on the Bhiwandi-Thane bypass road in the early hours of August 16.

Police said the accused were identified through a painstaking analysis of around 150 CCTV cameras and technical surveillance, despite the absence of any direct lead at the crime scene.

Victim And Accused Identified

The deceased has been identified as Pawan Kumar Kaju Mahato, 33, a resident of Bihar, who was working as a trailer driver. The arrested accused have been identified as Rameez Abdul Rashid Ansari, 23, and Mohammad Alkaish Parvez Alam Momin, 25, both residents of Bhiwandi.

According to police, the incident took place at around 2.45 am on August 16, when Mahato had stopped trailer MH 46 BU 2110 near the Tata Aamantar site on the Bhiwandi-Thane bypass road and was having his meal.

Police said the two accused allegedly approached Mahato with the intention of robbing him. When he resisted their attempt, the accused allegedly attacked him with a knife, inflicting injuries to his neck. They allegedly took cash from him and fled from the spot on a motorcycle.

150 CCTV Cameras Analysed

Mahato was subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries. Following the incident, the Kongaoan police registered a murder case against unidentified persons and launched an investigation.

Considering the seriousness of the case, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bhiwandi Zone-II, Pawan Bansod, and Assistant Commissioner of Police Sachin Sangale directed the investigation. The probe was conducted under the leadership of Senior Police Inspector Mangesh Borse, with the investigation assigned to the crime investigation team.

Five police teams were formed to trace the suspects. Investigators initially had no concrete clue about the identity of the assailants. However, based on descriptions provided by eyewitnesses, police began examining CCTV footage from the crime scene and adjoining areas.

The teams painstakingly analysed footage from around 150 CCTV cameras across the area and Bhiwandi city for three consecutive days. During the exercise, investigators noticed suspects travelling on a motorcycle who matched the descriptions provided by witnesses.

Technical Surveillance Traces Suspects

The police subsequently used technical analysis to establish the identity and movements of the suspects. Following sustained efforts, Rameez Ansari and Mohammad Alkaish Momin were taken into custody. Police said the duo subsequently confessed to their involvement in the crime.
