Bhiwandi, April 1: Strong resentment is brewing among farmers in Thane district’s Bhiwandi taluka after authorities initiated land acquisition for the proposed road connecting Gaaymukh to Kharbav via Nagle and Paye.
The project, a key link to the upcoming Konkan Expressway, is expected to impact hundreds of acres of agricultural land across villages including Paye, Paygaon, Khardi, and Nagle.
Protests disrupt survey
On April 1, despite the presence of a heavy police bandobast, agitating farmers once again disrupted the official land survey, marking the third such protest against the acquisition process.
The protest is being spearheaded by the Shetkari Raja Hitkari Sanghatana, which has accused the administration of offering “grossly inadequate” compensation.
Compensation dispute
According to the affected farmers, the government has proposed a compensation of ₹1.21 lakh per guntha, which they claim does not reflect the actual market value of the land.
They pointed out that in several other infrastructure and development projects, compensation has been granted at rates up to five times the market price. In contrast, they have demanded a minimum compensation of ₹20 lakh per guntha.
Farmers warn of continued agitation
Farmer representative Arun Jadhav stated that the acquisition would leave many families landless and without a sustainable source of income. If our land is taken away, our livelihood will be destroyed.
We deserve fair and just compensation, he said, warning that protests will continue if their demands are ignored.

Administration response
The district administration has taken note of the situation and has scheduled a meeting with farmer representatives at the Collector’s office on April 6 in an attempt to resolve the issue amicably.
