Mumbai: A shocking case of fraud has emerged in Mumbai’s Zaveri Bazaar, where two artisans allegedly fled with gold ornaments worth Rs 1.25 crore that had been given to them for repairs. The LT Marg police have registered a case of embezzlement and fraud against the accused, identified as Varun Jana and Srikant.
Details On The Alleged Cheating
The complainant, Nilesh Jain, is a jeweller residing in the Kalachowki area and operates a wholesale gold jewellery business on the second floor of the Ustad Building in Zaveri Bazaar. Jain had known the accused artisans for a long time and regularly entrusted them with jewellery-making and repair work.
Between January 1 and January 19, 2025, Jain handed over 22-carat gold ornaments weighing 1,536 grams to the duo for repairs. The jewellery was valued at approximately Rs 1.25 crore. However, instead of completing the work, both artisans vanished without a trace, reported Lokmat Times.
Jain attempted to contact them multiple times, but they remained unreachable. When his calls went unanswered, he grew suspicious. Soon after, the accused switched off their phones, confirming that they had absconded with the valuables.
Realising that he had been cheated, Jain approached the LT Marg police station and filed a complaint. After verifying the details, the police registered a case of embezzlement and fraud against Varun Jana and Srikant.
Police Launches Search Operation To Nab Suspects
The cops have launched a search operation to locate the suspects. Two police teams have been dispatched outside Mumbai to track them down. Officials have assured that both accused will be arrested soon and efforts are underway to recover the stolen jewellery.
