World Bicycle Day is celebrated on 3 June. This day was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in April 2018. The resolution for World Bicycle Day recognizes "the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle which has been in use for two centuries and that it is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transport."
This day can be enjoyed by all and the bicycle is a system of human progress and advancement.
World Bicycle Day is now being associated with promoting a healthy lifestyle for those with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
To celebrate this Day, let us look at what health benefits cycling has to offer:
1. Increased cardiovascular fitness
2. Increased muscle strength and flexibility
3. Improved joint mobility
4. Decreased stress levels
5. Improved posture and coordination
6. Strengthened bones
7. Decreased body fat levels
8. Prevention or management of disease
9. Reduced anxiety and depression.
Cycling is mainly an aerobic activity which means that your heart, blood vessels and lungs all get a workout. You will breathe deeper, perspire and experience increased body temperature which will improve overall fitness level.
Cycling also helps with specific health issues like:
1. Obesity: Cycling is a good way to control or reduce weight as it raises your metabolic rate, builds muscle and burns body fat.
2. Cancer: Research has shown that if you cycle, the chance of bowel cancer is reduced. Some evidence suggests that regular cycling reduces the risk of breast cancer.
3. Bone injuries and arthritis: Cycling improves strength, balance and coordination. It may also help to prevent falls and fractures.
