India is set to celebrate the 80th Independence Day on Saturday, August 15, 2026. The celebration will signify 79 completed years of freedom since the country's gained independence on August 15, 1947. As the nation gears for the significant observance, two grassroots changemakers from Odisha and Assam have received invites from Rashtrapati Bhavan for the President of India’s Independence Day ‘At Home’ Reception on August 15 in recognition of their exceptional public service in some of the country’s most remote regions. President invites Odisha health worker and Assam conservationist

In a recognition of exceptional grassroots contributions, Odisha's health worker Durgaprasad Sahu and Assam-based conservationist Didom Daimari have been invited to attend the 'At Home' reception hosted by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on the occasion of India's Independence Day. The prestigious event honours individuals whose work has created a lasting impact on society. President Droupadi Murmu will meet the invitees during the Independence Day reception.

Who is Durgaprasad Sahu?

Durgaprasad Sahu is an Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) from Odisha, who has been acknowledged for his unwavering commitment to public healthcare. Over the years, Sahu has played a crucial role in improving maternal and child health services, vaccination drives, and raised awareness about preventive healthcare in rural communities.

Mr Sahu has been serving for 13 years at the Andahal Health Sub-Centre under Khairiput block in Malkangiri district. He provided healthcare to nearly 4,000 people, including members of the vulnerable Bonda tribal community. His work includes tuberculosis (TB), malaria, and leprosy control, maternal and child healthcare, immunisation and regular health camps.

Who is Didom Daimari?

Meanwhile, Didom Daimari, a respected conservationist from Assam’s Udalguri district, has dedicated his life to protecting the state's rich biodiversity. Known for his work in wildlife conservation and environmental awareness, Daimari has actively collaborated with local communities to safeguard forests and wildlife habitats. His initiatives have focused on promoting coexistence between humans and wildlife while encouraging sustainable conservation practices. He has earned national recognition for leading community-driven forest restoration and wildlife conservation efforts along the Indo-Bhutan-Arunachal Pradesh border.
