Honouring unsung heroes
I believe that in a country where the social sector including non-profit, philanthropic, and mission-based non-governmental organisations work at solving problems, often with the government, a more equitable and positive society is created. The country cruises ahead faster and better. So, when Rotary Club of Bombay Pier, dedicated to fostering social change and community development instituted the ‘Social Impact Awards’ I readily agreed to cheer them ahead as their Guest of Honour.
Especially since the event was aimed at recognising and celebrating ‘Unsung Heroes’, who have made exceptional contributions to society and demonstrated outstanding dedication, creativity, and innovation in addressing pressing social issues and making a tangible difference in the lives of others. These altruistic doers inspire others to also contribute and create positive change within our communities. I was definitely even more inspired when I sat watching the presentation of their journey and overjoyed when called upon to give away some of the awards. At a celebratory evening, this Rotary Club felicitated these young performers for their animal welfare, environmental solutions, or legal aid for abused women.
Enjoying the highs
Speaking of highs, I did not know until this week that sitting atop the tallest building in the world would also be such a heady experience. Burj Khalifa is magnificent up close and personal. More so when you’re sitting on one of the top floors enjoying their high tea. I was there alone and with myself and my thoughts – in an otherworldly experience not at all coveting company.
The other high point for me in Dubai is Mahesh Tourani's inimitable hospitality intertwined with stimulating conversations and spectacular multi-cuisines laid out under the full moon amidst Waterbodies and vines, yes even exotic wines.
This is one of my very few Dubai visits and I’m beginning to see some similarities between where our Mumbai is going and where Dubai has arrived. Kudos to BMC, Arjun Dhawan and all responsible for the stunning new addition of the 21-metre-wide teal blue girder, which now connects the coastal road to the Bandra-Worli sea link. I am so excited every time I take the few routes that have opened on the Coastal Road and can’t wait for Mumbai's all-new road connections to unfurl. So much to look forward to!
