Indore (Madhya Pradesh): The Madhya Pradesh government has announced the construction of a new road connecting the Hatod area of Indore to the Simhastha Bypass in Ujjain.
This road will serve as an alternative to the existing Indore-Ujjain route and is planned in preparation for the Simhastha fair in 2028.
The 48-kilometer-long road will cost ₹1,370 crore and pass through 29 villages. Of these, 20 villages are in Indore district, while nine are in Ujjain district. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this project is currently being prepared. Once the report is ready, it will be sent for government approval. After approval, land acquisition and construction will begin.
The road will start near Pitru Parvat in the Hatod area of Indore and connect directly to the Simhastha Bypass in Ujjain. It will be a four-lane greenfield road, requiring over 350 hectares of land. Officials from the Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation (MPRDC) have confirmed that work on the DPR is underway and is expected to be completed next month.

Around 70% of the road will fall in Indore district, with the remaining 30% in Ujjain district. This road will also link to the Indore-Ahmedabad highway, providing a direct route for pilgrims coming from Ahmedabad, Dhar, and Mumbai to reach Ujjain more conveniently.
Currently, vehicles traveling to Ujjain from Indore have to pass through MR-10 and Lavkush Square, causing heavy traffic on the existing road. The new route is expected to reduce traffic pressure on the current Indore-Ujjain highway.
Existing Road Being Upgraded
Meanwhile, the existing Indore-Ujjain road is being upgraded to six lanes. Work is being carried out in sections from Aurobindo Hospital to Harifata, with encroachments along the roadside already removed in rural areas. The construction is being done in phases to minimize the impact on traffic.
The new road and the six-lane upgrade aim to improve connectivity and make travel easier for pilgrims and commuters ahead of the Simhastha fair in 2028.
