Dhar (Madhya Pradesh): Anganwadi workers are often called upon to perform cleaning duties at government programmes, distracting them from their primary responsibility of caring for children at Anganwadi centres.

This issue was highlighted during a recent event in Rajgarh tehsil, where a programme was organised to promote conservation and revival of water sources under the Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan.

During the event, an awareness rally was held to encourage the community to keep the areas around step wells and hand pumps clean. While many public representatives, including councillors and the Municipal Council president, attended, it was the Anganwadi workers who were seen sweeping and cleaning. Meanwhile, male employees from the Municipal Council stood by without participating in cleaning efforts.

When we spoke to project officer Kamal Singh Nigwal about this situation, he admitted that sending Anganwadi workers to clean up government programmes is inappropriate. He stated that he would discuss the matter with Chief Municipal Officer (CMO) of Rajgarh. Attempts to reach CMO Aarti Girwal for comment were unsuccessful, as she did not answer the call.

This incident raises concerns about the treatment of Anganwadi workers and the expectations placed on them. Many believe that all employees should share the responsibility of community service, rather than placing the burden solely on Anganwadi workers, who are already dedicated to supporting children and families.
