Indore: Additional chief secretary (Health) Mohammed Suleman said that vaccination of the targeted population in Indore, at least first dose, would be completed by mid-July.

“We have taken the target of vaccinating the total population in the state by September but we will complete the target in Indore in mid-July as it is leading the state in vaccination drive,” Suleman said addressing the media after chairing a review meeting of COVID-19 and vaccination in the city.

He said that they are facing two major issues in vaccination drives in the state i.e. vaccine hesitancy and maintaining a supply of vaccines.

“There were about 270 sessions in the state where not a single person came to get the jab throughout the day. There is still hesitancy among people in getting vaccinated and we are taking it not as a hurdle but as a challenge. Similarly, we are dealing with the challenge of maintaining the supply of vaccines across the state to get people protected against the deadly disease,” he said.

The ACS also said that the state is using 100 per cent of the vaccine allocated without any wastage due to which they got about 10 lakh more doses from the centre.

Appreciating the vaccination drive in Indore, he said, “Indore has created a record in vaccination and also helped us in overcoming the challenge of vaccine hesitancy as people, even in tribal areas, have demanded more vaccine then the allotted one.”

Replying to a question on the likelihood of the third wave coming, Suleman said that no one can predict the exact time, date, size, and intensity of the third wave but whenever it comes or not, they have started preparations for the same.

“We have faced the second wave and we have learnt from it. We have already started preparation for beds including those for children while setting up of oxygen plants is on. As per the AIIMS director, following COVID norms and vaccination can prevent us from the severity of the third wave if it comes,” he added.

’Vaccines work against Delta Plus variant of COVID-19’

While the erupting cases of ‘Delta Plus’ variant of COVID-19 has become a concern, the ACS said that the vaccines being administered to the people are effective against the variant.

"Among the five people found infected with the Delta plus variant, three are already vaccinated and even after getting affected with the new variant, there was no need for them to be admitted to hospital, which means the vaccine is effective against the highly contagious variant," Suleiman said.

He said that a top official of National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) informed in a video conferencing that Delta plus variant is comparatively more contagious with high severity.

“As the sample size is too low for genome sequencing, it is not possible to predict what will be its impact on the population. The NCDC official has also informed the Chief Minister that soon genome sequencing will be started in Madhya Pradesh along with four other states,” he added.
