Indore (Madhya Pradesh): In a first-of-its-kind move in Madhya Pradesh, the Indore Regional Transport Office (RTO) has cancelled the registration of 29 vehicles for repeatedly violating traffic rules — each over 20 times. The action marks a bold new step in enforcing road safety and discipline on city roads.

The decision was taken following a review meeting of the Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) chaired by Collector Asheesh Singh on July 1. Officials decided that stronger measures were needed against habitual offenders who put public safety at risk.

Under the ITMS system, cameras installed across Indore have been issuing e-challans since November 3, 2023, capturing offences like red light jumping, overspeeding, and triple riding.

A data analysis by the Indore Smart City Development Limited along with the police department, identified 31 vehicles involved in repeated violations. A list of these vehicles was handed over to the RTO.

Despite being served notices and given a chance to explain, 29 vehicle owners failed to respond within the stipulated timeframe. Consequently, on Friday, the RTO cancelled their vehicle registrations under Section 55(3) of the Central Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The remaining two cases are still under review.

Speaking on the action, Indore RTO Pradeep Sharma said, “This is the first such action in the state. Repeated violators cannot be allowed to endanger lives. Earlier, we only cancelled driving licences. This move takes it a step further — targeting the vehicles themselves.”

He added that the step would prove to be a milestone for road safety, encouraging safer and more responsible commuting in the city.
