Indore (Madhya Pradesh): On the outskirts of Indore, nestled beyond the Pitru Parvat parking near Devdharam village, lies a place that breathes humanity — the Nirashrit Sevashram. This year, the unique shelter home completed 10 years of compassionate service, becoming a home for more than 110 abandoned, disabled and destitute elderly citizens.

Started in 2014 by Yash Prerna Parashar, the ashram today houses 110 elderly residents, offering them not just shelter but dignity, care and emotional healing. The work at Nirashrit Sevashram has been widely appreciated, including by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited director Rakesh Bhawsar, who has personally endorsed Yash’s humanitarian efforts.

What makes this place extraordinary is that it runs entirely free of cost — no government aid, no fees from the residents — only driven by the commitment of Yash and a team of selfless volunteers.

The ashram is inclusive — offering a safe space to the blind, hearing-impaired and differently-abled. Currently, 75 elderly residents remain unidentified despite rescue efforts. Of these, 48 are bedridden, with 55 unable to perform basic hygiene activities independently. Some were abandoned by their own families due to severe illnesses and rescued from the streets or hospital corridors.

The ashram has its own physiotherapist, who ensures that medical care, wound dressing and timely medications are taken care of. Recently, a man suffering from filariasis (elephantiasis), abandoned for five years in a hospital ward, was brought here when no other institution accepted him. Today, he is receiving treatment, dignity and care.

The rescue team, led by Jaydeep Joshi, remains on standby round the clock. Caregivers like Shivani Parihar, Shivam Rathore, Chetna Rajoria, Anil Namdev, Neha Pawar, Ashok Kumar and Sarvesh Dayal Sharma stay at the ashram 24/7, tending to every need of the elderly.

Nirashrit Sevashram is not just a shelter — it’s a living example of what compassion, service and silent heroism look like in today’s world.
