A leopard attacked and killed a calf near a petrol pump in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand late at night, with the entire incident being captured on a CCTV camera installed at the site.
The attack took place near the Devdhar petrol pump and has triggered fear among residents of the area. The CCTV footage, which has since gone viral on social media, shows the leopard suddenly rushing towards the calf before pouncing on it.
The video further shows the calf's mother trying to protect it from the predator. Despite making repeated attempts to drive the leopard away, the cow was unable to rescue the animal.
An account on X, Arbind Pandey Avinash, shared the footage and claimed that the animals had sensed the presence of the predator beforehand and had become alert. According to the post, the leopard launched the attack so swiftly that the calf had little chance of escaping.
The user also claimed that the cow continued to struggle to free the calf from the leopard's grip, while other animals nearby eventually retreated after failing to stop the attack.
The authenticity of the social media post has not been independently verified.
The video has attracted widespread attention online, with many users expressing concern over increasing encounters between humans and wild animals in areas close to forests and settlements.
Local authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident. However, residents have urged the forest department to increase surveillance in the area to prevent similar attacks in the future.
