New Delhi, February 14: Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday filed nomination for Rajya Sabha Elections 2024 from Rajasthan's Jaipur. Sonia Gandhi along with Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi reached Jaipur in Rajasthan today to file nomination papers for the upcoming polls.
Sonia Gandhi reached Jiapur and was received by Congress leader and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, other leaders and party workers at the Jaipur Airport.
The Congress party on Wednesday also released a list of candidates that have been approved by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to contest the upcoming polls.
Congress fielded Sonia Gandhi from Rajasthan and also named Abhishek Manu Singhvi from Himachal Pradesh. The Congress party finalised the name of Dr. Akhilesh Prasad Singh to contest the Rajya Sabha elections from Bihar and named Chandrakant Handore from Maharashtra.
The Rajya Sabha Elections 2024 will be held on Tuesday, February 27 and the results for the elections will be declared after the counting of votes on the same day.
Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has been the working president of the party for around 22 years. She has been holding the position of the Congress Chief for a long span of almost 22 years between 1988 and 2022.
Earlier, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was last elected to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan. His candidature from the Rajya Sabha Seat will retire in April this year. Sonia Gandhi has filed the nomination from the same seat. Former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi had also been a member of Rajya Sabha from the same seat.
Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has been elected to the Lok Sabha from the Rae Bareilly constituency in Uttar Pradesh, and the move of her filing nominations from Rajasthan for the Rajya Sabha seat, ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024, indicates that she will refrain from fighting Lok Sabha election from the Rae Bareilly seat.
The Rajya Sabha Elections 2024 will be held on 56 seat from 15 states on February 27. The term of the office for the members of the 50 Rajya Sabha seats from 13 states will end on April 2 and the other six members from the remainig two states will retire on April 3.
