New Delhi: Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh is back in the reckoning after Congress President Sonia Gandhi reportedly advised party vice-president Rahul Gandhi not to dump the veterans in his attempt to groom the young leadership.
Amarinder, who is currently the deputy leader of Congress in the Lok Sabha, has been grumbling for the past many months over appointment of former Gurdaspur MP Partap Singh Bajwa (58) as the PCC President. A decision which was earlier taken by Rahul. He reportedly even thought at one stage to look for future outside the Congress.
The party sources said Sonia recently criticised Rahul for allowing Bajwa to undermine Amarinder and told him that the party cannot be rebuilt in Punjab unless the former CM is involved at every stage.
She has reportedly ordered that Amarinder will be the party’s face in Punjab. Sources said the leadership has also agreed to drop Bajwa and bring a person of Amarinder’s confidence as the state party president.
