New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday heard a plea challenging the detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA). A bench comprising Justice Aravind Kumar and Justice Prasanna B Varale heard the matter. The Centre, defending Wangchuk’s detention, told the Supreme Court that Wangchuk wants “Ladakh to become Nepal or Bangladesh.”
“He says riot like situation in Nepal. He wants them to do what was happening in Nepal,” Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said. “He is misleading the young generation to do what Nepalese did in their country,” he added.
“He (Wangchuk) said that presence of armed personnel is making the youth angry and the outcome will be similar that of Nepal,” Mehta added.
Mehta further said, “What will happen if I am sent to jail, he said? There will be events like Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. This is happening in a border area, a very sensitive border. He wants Ladakh to become Nepal or Bangladesh. Clearly what he wants to say.” The next hearing in the matter is scheduled for Tuesday at 2 pm.
For the unversed, Wangchuk was detained on September 26, 2025, under the NSA. He was later shifted to Jodhpur. He was detained two days after violent protests demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh, which left four people dead and 90 injured in the Union territory. The government had accused him of inciting the violence.
