New Delhi: In a big relief for Sushil Kumar, the Delhi High Court on Tuesday granted bail to the Olympics silver medallist wrestler in the Sagar Dhankar murder case. Kumar is the prime accused in the murder case of junior national wrestling champion Dhankar.

The bail order was passed by a bench of Justice Sanjeev Narula. The murder-accused wrestler will now be required to furnish a bail bond of Rs 50,000 and two sureties of like amount.

Kumar, along with others, is accused of allegedly assaulting former Dhankar and his two friends Sonu and Amit Kumar in the parking lot of Delhi's Chhatrasal stadium, on May 4, 2021, over an alleged property dispute. After Dhankar's death, Kumar was on the run for two weeks. He was named the main accused in the 170-page chargesheet filed by the Delhi Police.

According to the post-mortem report, died due to cerebral damage resulting from blunt object impact. Kumar was arrested after staying on the run for 18 days following Dhankar's death. According to Delhi Police officials, Kumar had travelled to Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Haryana for 18 days before getting arrested from Delhi's Mundka area.

The wrestler has been in judicial custody since June 2, 2021. He was charged with murder, rioting and criminal conspiracy after Dhankar's death. The junior national wrestling champion died of the injuries he sustained after being assaulted by Kumar and his accomplice.

Kumar was earlier granted interim bail, for performing the last rites of his father and for undertaking surgery for his torn ligament. In March 2023, Rohini Court granted him four days of bail to the wrestler for performing his father’s last rites. Later, in July same year he underwent a knee surgery.

Sushil Kumar had won a bronze medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and a silver in the 2012 London Olympics.
