On Monday, Pinjra Tod activist and JNU student Devangana Kalita was arrested for the third time in yet another case related to the violent riots that took place in Delhi earlier this year.
Reports suggest that Kalita who was arrested just as her 14-day custody period ended, had now been booked for unlawful assembly and rioting at Daryaganj.
Reacting to the reports Public Interest Lawyer and activist Prashant Bhushan condemned the Delhi Police.
"Dalla Police! Dil ki police?" he wondered in a tweet, quoting a news report on Kalita's arrest.
The comments have sparked the ire of netizens. Many urged the Delhi Police to look into his words, with some even calling for his arrest.
"Dalla Prashant Bhushan! PIL ka Dalal," wrote Tajinder Bagga.
"Prashant Bhushan now says Dalla. This is how these people abuse our Policemen who are working hard day in and day out as Corona Warriors to save us & without caring for their own lives," criticised one Twitter user.
"This is an absolute insult and abuse towards a premier government institution and is a punishable offence. I urge @DelhiPolice @CPDelhi to book this man under the relevant sections of law. File a FIR immediately and arrest him," urged another.
Many also reminded the internet of the time Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had called the police "thulla". A criminal defamation case had been filed against him by a police constable, but Kejriwal was later discharged.
