Ranchi: Six Kanwariyas were killed and 24 others injured after their bus they were travelling in reportedly rammed into a truck in Jharkhand’s Deoghar district early Tuesday morning.

About The Accident

Police said that the accident took place near Nawakura village in the Jamunia forest area under Mohanpur police station limits in Deoghar district, when Kanwarias after offering holy water on Baba Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar were travelling to Baba Basukinath Dham, another major pilgrim centre in Jharkhand.

Sub-divisional officer of Deoghar, Ravi Kumar, said that the 32-seat private bus reportedly crashed directly into a truck after the driver lost control. After the collision, the bus moved another 100-200 feet before hitting a pile of bricks, he added.

Deputy Commissioner, Deoghar, Naman Priyesh Lakra,  confirmed the casualties and said that eight of the injured were being treated at AIIMS, while the rest were undergoing treatment at Sadar Hospital.

SDO Kumar said that the responsibility for the accident could not be fixed immediately but the initial reports suggested that the driver, Subhash Turi, a resident of Mohanpur, might have dozed off at the wheel. “It was early morning, and the driver was likely very tired,” he said.

SDO said that the driver and  four others died on the spot. He said that police and medical teams immediately rushed to the spot, rescued the injured, and admitted them to the Sadar Hospital.

While official sources have confirmed six deaths so far, local MP Nishikant Dubey claimed that  18 devotees lost lives in the mishap.
