Gurugram authorities have advised government and private sector employees to work from home on August 25 amid heavy rainfall, waterlogging and severe traffic congestion in the city.
Gurugram Deputy Commissioner Uttam Singh issued the advisory as several parts of the city witnessed waterlogging and prolonged traffic jams following heavy rain on Monday. Schools have also been advised to conduct classes online to avoid inconvenience to students and staff.
The advisory has currently been issued only for August 25, though officials may extend it depending on weather conditions and the situation on the ground.
Heavy rain brought relief from the recent spell of intense heat but disrupted normal life across Gurugram and several parts of the Delhi-NCR region. Commuters reported being stranded on roads for hours, with many reaching their workplaces late. Gurugram witnessed particularly severe waterlogging at several locations.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast further spells of heavy rain in the coming days.
According to IMD scientist Dr Shashikant, Monday’s rainfall in Delhi was driven by the interaction of monsoon winds approaching from the north and moisture-laden easterly winds associated with a low-pressure area near West Bengal.
Weather experts have also pointed to increasingly erratic rainfall patterns in Delhi this monsoon, with intense downpours followed by prolonged dry spells. Scientists have attributed the changing rainfall pattern and rising humidity to the impact of climate change.
