NEW DELHI : A Dalit in Union Minister of State for Social Justice Ramdas Athawale woke up to throw an open challenge to the cow protection vigilante, asking the Dalit youths across the country to stop removing the cow carcasses and let these vigilante brigades undertake the dirty task.
“Why should the Dalit youths do the dirty work of removing and skinning dead cows if they are being beaten up and insulted for doing so? Let the dead cows litter the streets. Let those men who beat the Dalits over their zeal to protect cows handle the problem,” said Athawale ahead of his visit to Una in Gir-Somnath district in Gujarat on Friday to meet the victims beaten up for the suspected cow slaughter.
“While it is okay for them to want to protect cows, the gau raksha samitis should understand that cows do die. If a cow dies and Dalits are removing and skinning it, there is nothing wrong in it. If a cow dies, what can anyone do about it,” he asked.
Asserting that the Dalits are doing a civic service to society by removing the carcasses, he said the Gujarat Government should crack down on these gau raksha samitis if they resort to violence in their efforts to protect cows.
Better if the Dalits stop this work as desired by Babasaheb Ambedkar and engage in other works, he added.
