Guwahati, November 2: The Special Task Force of Assam has arrested six individuals in connection with a major organised financial fraud syndicate operating through mule bank accounts, with investigators probing suspected links to Pakistan Intelligence Operatives.

The action follows intelligence inputs provided by central agencies, including the Gajraj Military Intelligence (Army Intelligence) unit based in Tezpur, leading to a formal case registered at the STF Police Station following a complaint lodged by Sonitpur Police.

Suspicious Bank Transactions Trigger Investigation

The investigation unfolded after suspicious transactions were detected in a State Bank of India account belonging to Marjina Begum, a resident of Ganesh Nagar under Chandmari Police Station in Guwahati. Within a span of just 47 days between June 22 and August 5, the account received credits amounting to lakhs of rupees, which were withdrawn almost immediately after each deposit.

Further probes implicated Mofijul Haque, aged 22, and Himangshu Das, aged 19, both residents of Bamunimaidan in Guwahati, in executing suspicious financial transactions linked to the account.

STF Arrests Six In Multiple Raids

On October 28, the STF launched a targeted operation and arrested Marjina Begum, Mofijul Haque, and Himangshu Das, seizing mobile phones and incriminating documents. Interrogation of Haque and Das revealed additional associates, prompting follow-up raids. On October 29, Rakib Hussain, aged 34, was arrested from Ganesh Nagar. On October 30, two more suspects were taken into custody: 25-year-old Iftar Hussain from Uzanbazar and 20-year-old Arman Azuz Hoque from Ananda Nagar in Noonmati.

Across these operations, which were assisted by Guwahati City Police, officers seized laptops, electronic gadgets, bank passbooks, ATM cards, and various sensitive documents.

Investigators Probe Interstate Fraud Network

Preliminary findings indicate that the syndicate has been operating across multiple states for roughly two years, utilising a network of mule bank accounts to siphon off several crores of rupees from victims. Authorities believe the mastermind behind the operation coordinates activities from outside Assam. The STF is continuing its investigation to dismantle the broader network, locate remaining syndicate members, trace the complete flow of fraudulent funds, and establish the full extent of involvement by Pakistan-based intelligence operatives or other anti-national elements.
