Actress Rupali Ganguly, known for her outspoken nature off-screen, never shies away from expressing her views, especially on political and social issues. Recently, she slammed West Bengal Police over the arrest of social media influencer and law student Sharmistha Panoli.

On Tuesday (June 3), Rupali reacted to a post in which Sharmistha's lawyer Md Samimuddin claimed that she was suffering from kidney stone and the police authorities have failed to maintain proper hygiene. He also accused the authorities of not giving her access to newspapers and magazines.

Samimuddin also stated that they have filed a petition in the court so that Sharmistha gets access to 'basic rights'.

Reacting to the post, the Anupamaa actress slammed West Bengal Police and asked why Sharmistha is being treated like a 'gangster'.

Rupali wrote, "Has West Bengal Police, So much under the pressure of Mamata Banerjee, that they have forgotten even basic humanity?"

She further questioned, "Why is this girl being treated as if she is a murderer or a Gangster? I Request @NCWIndia & @India_NHRC to intervene in this matter."

For those unversed, Sharmistha was arrested by Kolkata Police from Gurugram on May 30 for allegedly making communal remarks while replying to a post on Operation Sindoor. After backlash, she deleted the video and issued an apology.

She has been sent to judicial custody till June 13.

"I do hereby tender my UNCONDITIONAL APOLOGY whatever was put are my personal feelings and i never intentionally wanted to hurt anybody so if anybody is hurt I’m sorry for the same. I expect co-operation and understanding. Henceforth, i will be cautious in my public post. Again please accept my apologies," she had said in her X post.

On the other hand, after being accused of arresting the influencer 'unlawfully', Kolkata Police reportedly stated that due procedures were followed.
