Punjabi actor and singer Ammy Virk has called out Bollywood for its history of stereotyping Sikh characters, describing past portrayals as a form of "character assassination." In a recent interview, the Saunkan Saunkanay 2 star also reflected on how Sikh representation in Hindi cinema has evolved over the years.

"Of course, there has been some character assassination, too. They could have shown Sikhs as sophisticated people, too, but most characters were reduced to comic relief," Ammy said during an interview with Hindustan Times.

The actor further criticised the tendency to reduce Sikh characters to sources of humour, overlooking the depth and diversity within the community. He added that Sikhs have made noteworthy contributions in various spheres and industries, yet this was rarely reflected in Bollywood films.

"There have been Sikh Prime Ministers and pop stars. They also represent our culture," he pointed out.

Ammy also noted that there has been a positive shift in recent years, with more realistic and respectful portrayals emerging in mainstream cinema. Alongside Diljit Dosanjh, Ammy is among the few Sikh actors currently taking center stage in Bollywood, challenging long-held stereotypes.

He went on to say, "Now I am happy with the change. People like Diljit paaji (Dosanjh) are doing so good and representing us on the global stage."

Meanwhile, on the work front, Ammy is currently busy with the promotions of Saunkan Saunkanay 2, the sequel to his hit Punjabi comedy. The film, which explores the humourous chaos in the life of a man with two wives, is set to hit theaters on May 30. It also stars Nimrat Khaira and Sargun Mehta in the lead roles.
