New Delhi: The central government has announced another major relief for the public. The Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the continuation of a Rs 300 subsidy on a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder for beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY).

This benefit will be available for up to nine domestic cylinder refills in a financial year, until FY 2025-26. The government expects to spend around Rs 12,000 crore on this scheme.

Aim of the Scheme

India depends on imports for about 60% of its LPG needs. To protect PMUY beneficiaries from fluctuations in global prices and to ensure the affordable use of LPG, the government started providing a Rs 200 subsidy per 14.2 kg cylinder in May 2022, covering up to 12 refills per year. The subsidy also applies proportionately to 5 kg cylinders.

Rise in LPG Usage Among Beneficiaries

LPG usage among PMUY beneficiaries has increased significantly. The average per capita consumption (PCC) has gone up from about 3 refills in 2019-20 to 3.68 refills in 2022-23, and further to around 4.47 refills in 2024-25. This shows more people are now regularly using LPG.

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana – At a Glance

Launched in May 2016, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana aims to provide LPG connections without any security deposit to women from low-income households across India. As of July 1, 2025, about 10.33 crore PMUY connections have been distributed nationwide.

Every PMUY beneficiary receives a free LPG connection, which includes a cylinder, pressure regulator, safety hose, DGCC booklet, and installation charges, all covered by the security deposit.

Under Ujjwala 2.0, the first refill and a stove are also provided free of cost. The entire expense is borne by the government or oil companies, so beneficiaries do not have to pay anything for the initial setup.
