Bangkok: Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed a comprehensive 21-point action plan at the sixth BIMSTEC Summit on Friday, aimed at boosting regional connectivity, digital integration, disaster management, and youth engagement among the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) nations.
Digital Integration and Economic Growth
Modi’s plan highlights the importance of linking India’s Unified Payment Interface (UPI) with the payment systems of BIMSTEC countries to facilitate smoother trade, tourism, and industrial transactions. Additionally, he proposed a pilot study to share Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) experiences, enhancing the region's tech capabilities.
To promote economic collaboration, Modi suggested establishing a BIMSTEC Chamber of Commerce, organizing annual business summits, and exploring trade in local currencies within the region.
Disaster Management and Regional Security
Addressing the recent devastating earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for coordinated disaster management. He proposed setting up the BIMSTEC Centre of Excellence for Disaster Management in India to strengthen relief, rehabilitation, and emergency responses.
Modi also highlighted the importance of maritime security, proposing the establishment of a Sustainable Maritime Transport Centre in India to promote capacity building, research, and policy coordination in maritime affairs.
Youth Engagement and Capacity Building
Recognizing the potential of youth as catalysts for change, Modi proposed the BODHI (BIMSTEC for Organised Development of Human Resource Infrastructure) initiative, aiming to train 300 youths from BIMSTEC countries annually in India.
Further initiatives include scholarships for BIMSTEC students at institutions like the Forest Research Institute of India and Nalanda University, an annual training program for young diplomats, and the establishment of Centers of Excellence in traditional medicine, agriculture, and cancer care.
Cultural and Sports Diplomacy
To strengthen people-to-people ties, Modi announced plans to host the BIMSTEC Traditional Music Festival, BIMSTEC Young Leaders’ Summit, and the first BIMSTEC Games in 2027. The BIMSTEC Athletics Meet and Young Professional Visitors Programme will also be launched to foster cultural exchange and sportsmanship.
Modi concluded his address by emphasizing BIMSTEC's potential as a bridge between South and Southeast Asia, advocating for deeper regional integration. The Bangkok Vision 2030, adopted during the summit, aims to realize shared goals of prosperity, security, and inclusivity in the Bay of Bengal region.
