Petrol, diesel prices remain unchanged on April 21: Check rates in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and other cities

In Mumbai, petrol is being sold for Rs 106.31/litre and diesel for Rs 94.27/litre.

According to the most recent price notification by fuel retailers, petrol and diesel prices were unchanged on April 21, in major cities, and costs have been steady for about nine months now.

The prices of petrol and diesel change state by state, depending upon various criteria such as Value Added Tax (VAT), freight charges, the local taxes, etc.

Public sector OMCs including Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL) revise their prices daily in line with international benchmark prices and forex rates.

Citywide breakdown

In Delhi, petrol and diesel cost Rs 96.72/litre and Rs 89.62/litre, respectively.

In Mumbai, petrol is being sold for Rs 106.31/litre and diesel for Rs 94.27/litre.

Petrol and diesel are priced at Rs 102.86/litre and Rs 94.46/litre in Chennai and at Rs 106.03/litre and Rs 92.76/litre in Kolkata, respectively.

Petrol in UP's Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida-Greater Noida) has become cheaper by 27 paise to Rs 96.65 a litre where as diesel cost went down by 26 paise to Rs 89.82 per litre. In Ghaziabad petrol cost went up by 32 paise to Rs 96.58 and diesel cost rose by 30 paise to Rs 89.75 a litre.

The last country-wide change in fuel rates was on 21 May last year, when Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman slashed excise duty on petrol by Rs 8 per litre and Rs 6 per litre on diesel.

Windfall tax revision

The special additional excise duty on crude petroleum has been increased to Rs 6,400 per tonne from April 19, whereas the excise duty on Diesel has been cut to nil. The windfall tax on petrol and ATF is expected to continue at Nil.

Oil Prices

Oil prices on Thursday went down $2 a barrel to reach its lowest since late March. The fall was due to the fear that possible recession could dent demand. Brent crude futures dropped to $81.10 per barrel, down by $2.02, whereas West Texas Intermediate crude futures lost $1.87 to settle at $77.29.
