Mumbai: These days, people buy almost everything online- whether it’s vegetables, groceries, or daily essentials. But for a 71-year-old woman from Mumbai’s Wadala area, ordering just 1 litre of milk online turned into a nightmare. Instead of receiving milk, she ended up losing a whopping Rs 18.5 lakh from her bank accounts.
How the fraud began
On August 4, the woman received a call from a man named Deepak, who introduced himself as an executive of a milk supply company. He sent her a link, claiming she could place her order through it. Once she clicked on the link and entered her details, the cyber scam began.

Deepak kept talking to her for about an hour, instructing her on filling in the details. When she finally hung up in frustration, he called back the next day and managed to extract even more personal information. Within days, her bank accounts were wiped clean.
Money vanishes from three accounts
A few days later, the woman visited her bank and was shocked to learn that Rs 1.7 lakh had already been withdrawn. Soon after, she discovered that money had also disappeared from her two other accounts. In total, Rs 18.5 lakh was gone.

Police investigation underway
The police later found that the woman’s phone was hacked after she clicked the fraudulent link. A case has been registered, and the investigation is ongoing.
