Auto sales – some gear up some gear down

New Delhi: Automobile sector presented its sales numbers for the month of February on Friday. A comparison of sales for the month passed by with corresponding month of previous year is presented below: Hinduja Group flagship Ashok Leyland on Friday reported marginal rise in total sales at 18,245 units in February this year as against 18,181 units sold during the corresponding month in the previous year. Of which medium and heavy commercial vehicles during the month under review declined 3% to 13,291 units. Light commercial vehicles sales, however, grew by 11 per cent to 4,954 units.

Tata Motors reported 3% decline in domestic sales to 57,221 units in February 2019 as compared with 58,993 units in the same month last year. Company’s passenger vehicle sales in the domestic market increased 2% to 18,110 units.  However, its domestic commercial vehicle (CV) sales stood at 39,111 units in February, down five per cent from 41,222 units. Total exports during February 2019 stood at 2,930 units, a big dip of 39 per cent year-on-year due to congestion at Bangladesh border, new regulations and political uncertainty in Sri Lanka and slump in Middle East automotive market, the company said.

While, Mahindra & Mahindra reported 10 per cent increase in total sales at 56,005 units in February, its domestic sales were up 9 per cent at 52,915 units. Passenger vehicle sales last month stood at 26,109 units as against 22,389 units in the year-ago month, a growth of large 17 per cent, the company said. Commercial vehicles sales grew by a mere 1 per cent. In its tractor segment, M&M reported 8% decline at 18,978 units in February. Its domestic sales stood at 18,105 units of tractors, down 7 per cent.

Exports also declined at a whopping 28 per cent to 873 units as compared to 1,216 units. Another auto peer, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) reported a minor decline of 1.63 per cent in total sales in February at 12,497 units as against 12,705 units in the same month last year. Leading the light vehicles, Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL) reported a 16 per cent increase in its domestic sales to 13,527 units in February against 11,650 units for the corresponding month in previous year.
