Book: The Object Of Your Affections

Author: Falguni Kothari

Publisher: Graydon House Books

Pages: 349; Price: Rs 450

The Objects of Your Affections revolves around the life of Paris Kahn Fraser and her best friend, Naira Dalmia. Paris is a headstrong individual, successful assistant district attorney, married to a handsome Scottish jewelry designer and settled in New York.

Naira is an artifacts collector, married to a big-shot investor who later loses all his investments when his bluff goes wrong. An unfortunate series of events leads to Naira becoming a widow at an early age. Fighting through uncompromising family expectations, she shifts to New York to start afresh.

Paris and Naira’s friendship has been through a lot of ups and downs, but there is nothing that they wouldn’t do for each other. Whether or not their friendship survives, is tested when Paris asks Naira to be her surrogate.

The overall storyline is good, but nothing that we haven't read before. The writing seems fragmented and the view points are not well-described. As a reader, I did not feel connected to the character. The emotions delivered too, felt superficial. The complexities in Paris's and Naira’s relationship are shown as to be very normal, something that is difficult to accept. Since the book is based on the fundamental of a strong friendship, that very aspect seems to be lacking a sort of refining, definition.

Overall, an average book, more colloquially can be called as one-time-read.
