Bhind (Madhya Pradesh): A rape suspect climbed onto a bridge over the Chambal River in Bhind and threatened to jump after the family of his former lover allegedly refused to hand over a baby girl whom he claimed was his daughter.

Police from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh reached the spot after receiving information about the incident. After nearly an hour of counselling, officers persuaded the man to climb down safely.

According to police, the man, identified as Golu Purvanshi, is a resident of Surpura village under Ater police station limits. He was reportedly in a relationship with a woman and had left home with her some time ago.

After the woman returned, her family lodged a complaint at Ater police station. Police registered a case against Golu under charges including kidnapping and rape. He was subsequently arrested and sent to jail.

After being released from jail, Golu learnt that the woman had given birth to a baby girl. He claimed that the child was his daughter and demanded that she be allowed to live with him.

He approached the woman’s family and asked them to hand over the child, but they refused. He also placed his demand before the police.

Golu later travelled to an area near Jaitpur under the Khaira Rathore police station limits in Uttar Pradesh and again contacted the child’s family. When they rejected his demand, he climbed onto the Chambal River bridge.

The man reportedly hung from the bridge’s railing and threatened to jump into the river. Police teams from Khaira Rathore and Ater police stations rushed to the spot and began speaking with him.

Officers advised him to present his claim regarding the child through the proper legal process. After prolonged counselling, Golu calmed down and moved away from the railing to a safe place.

Police counselled him further before allowing him to return home. Their timely intervention prevented a possible tragedy.
