Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): After the High Court order clearing the way for promotions, the Police Headquarters (PHQ) is working on implementing the decision as a large number of promotions are pending in the police department.
On Wednesday, May 6, 2026, the Special Director General (Administration) issued orders based on the High Court directive dated April 23, 2026.
Earlier, the PHQ had stopped assigning charge of higher posts, such as promoting sub-inspectors as in-charge inspectors or inspectors as Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs), after the state government imposed a ban on such arrangements.
The Madhya Pradesh High Court in Jabalpur, in its April 23, 2026 order, directed the authorities to provide charge on higher posts. At present, around 1.04 lakh police personnel are serving in the department. Promotions are due on more than 26,000 posts.
PHQ officials said they would follow the formula adopted by other departments. According to officials, thousands of police personnel are currently serving as in-charge DSPs, inspectors, sub-inspectors (SI), assistant sub-inspectors (ASI) and head constables.
The department is also working on the parameters laid down in the promotion policy. In the state, 410 DSP-rank posts are reserved for promotion.
Inspectors are promoted as DSPs against these posts. At present, 297 posts are being handled by in-charge officials, while 113 posts remain vacant for promotion. Similarly, the department has 1,657 inspector posts, most of which are being handled by in-charge inspectors. Around 70 to 80 posts are vacant for promotion.
About 2,800 posts of sub-inspectors, 8,100 posts of ASI and 13,400 posts of head constables are due for promotion.
