Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The state government is likely to bring wild buffaloes, which went extinct 100 years ago from Madhya Pradesh, next week.
There are plans to bring 50 wild buffaloes from Assam. During Chief Minister Mohan Yadav's trip to the state, there were discussions between MP and Assam governments for bringing wild buffaloes and rhinoceroses to MP.
In the first phase, 20 wild buffaloes were to be brought from Assam, but because of rainfall, catching buffaloes from forests has become a problem.
This is the reason why only five wild buffaloes are being brought to the state in the first phase.
A team from the MP forest department has already reached Assam with vehicles to bring wild buffaloes to the Kanha National Park, where Yadav will release them.
Afterwards, wild buffaloes brought in different phases will be released in various national parks in the state.
In exchange for wild buffaloes, the state will give a pair of tigers and six crocodiles to Assam.
The wild buffaloes do not exist in MP. A large number of them are found in Assam, while a few are available in Chhatisgarh.
Once, the state forests were abundant with wild buffaloes, but because of diseases and hunting, they went extinct.
Now, the government is making efforts to bring wild buffaloes to the state and create an environment suitable for them.
